The New Slavery

5 June 2010 4 Comments

Pushed by civil rights and feminist groups, including actress Demi Moore, the issue of human trafficking, a form of modern-day slavery, is gaining currency. According to the U.S. State Department, as many as 2 million people a year, including up to 18,000 in this country, are bought, sold or smuggled for jobs ranging from prostitution to exotic dancing to housekeeping. Profits run $9 billion a year. The advocacy group Polaris Project claims that even more people are involved — up to 27 million people globally, 80 percent of whom are women and children.

Lord, I pray that You will open the eyes of each person who reads about this horrific devaluation of women and children that is in our own backyard. Pierce their hearts to declare, No More! Move them to action. Who knows that just one might be somebody’s daughter they love?

This is a topic that has been gaining momentum every year for the last 20 years but there is great hope also. I thank God according to His Word in Romans 5:20 that where sin abounds, grace does much more abound. Thanks to organizations such as Somebody’s Daughter, Remember Nhu and many other caring organizations, something positive is being done to reverse this horror. These organizations are actively involved in rescuing women and children out of the sex trade. Thank you, for bringing this very serious condition to the fore-front where it belongs. We all need to be reminded daily that this tragedy exist, and it will change when we get involved and actively help to change it .

    Judi,

I just wanted to comment on this and also your post that you put on my Facebook wall about the woman from Afghanistan that wss on the cover of Time Magazine. As women we must cry aloud for those who are oppressed and abused not only in prayer, but also in the spheres that God has given us influence. I do not believe we can remain silent any longer! We have been called to be light and salt in a very dark and needy world.

When I saw the magazine cover and read the article of the woman in Afghanistan, I wept. All day long, I heard in my spirit “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31:8

It’s not only time to wake up as women, but time to speak up and take a stand! Thank you Judi for doing just that! May God bless you as endeavor to be used mightily of Him!
